What is Web Services? Thats a new promising technology to facilitate IT systems integration. Technology is promising, because it boasts openness on any level, from interface description language to transports used in middle-ware.
But then, it seems like Founding Fathers of Web Methods are unable to make up their minds about what exactly they want to achieve...
For example, exchanging binary data is bad, because we have to deal with bytesex on all possible platforms. Lets use SOAP instead - everything will be wonderfully uniform XML then. But that's gonna increase amount of bytes we are hauling over the wire. Hmm, thats not good. But not to worry, people, there is a ready solution to overcome this limitation - it's called Fast Web Services.
What is Fast Web Services, you might ask? Why, thats easy - it's you usual Web Services, with ... compression of the SOAP stream on the transport layer. Yeah, that looks a lot like hauling binary data, but it's better in every respect - it's XML after all. And Fast Web Services are almost standard. Any day now W3C would bless them. Jump the bandwagon until it's too late!
Seems like the wheel got itself reinvented once again ...
